Your Fall Lawn Care Guide

As the weather begins to change after an abnormally sweltering summer, we may forget that it is already time to prepare your lawn for the fall. There are many steps you can take now to ensure you have a healthy green lawn in the spring.

Weed Control and Fungicide Applications

Fall is the best time to treat perennial weeds, which are unwanted plants that have lived for longer than two years and have established a strong root system in your lawn. These plants pull nutrients down into the roots for the winter, so it is best to attack those weeds now, so the weed killer travels down with the nutrients and attacks the weed at the roots. When dealing with fall weeds timing is everything.

Fall is also the time to spay for grass fungus like spring dead spot and zoysia patch. These grass fungal diseases cause spots of brown or yellow on your lawn and can cause a lot of damage if not treated early. Spraying with fungicide treatments now can save your lawn in the Spring.

Manage Falling Leaves and Mowing

Leaving fallen leaves piled up on your grass can be detrimental to your lawn. Leaves that are left on your lawn can trap moisture causing mold, pests, and possible disease. It is best to regularly rake your leaves off your lawn to ensure it remains healthy, giving it the best chance to flourish in the spring.

It is also important that you change the way you mow your lawn as the temperatures begin to drop. The best time to do your final mow of the season is typically October or November as soil temperatures drop below 60°F. It is best to make this final cut about half an inch longer than you typically would during a summer cut. For Georgia grasses the optimal mowing height is between 1 to 2.5 inches.

Change your Watering Schedule

As the weather begins to drop the amount of water your lawn needs reduces significantly. In early fall you should begin to decrease your lawns water intake and as the season goes on it is best to stop watering your lawn all together, unless facing a drought. As your lawn growth decreases, so should the amount that you water it.
