Weeds in planting beds can be an unsightly nuisance and can take hours of your valuable time to control by pulling or spraying. Although there is no way to completely eliminate weeds in your planting beds, bed pre-emergent treatments can greatly reduce weed germination, by as much as 80% to 90%, saving you time and money.

What is Pre-Emergent?

Pre-emergent herbicides help to control the growth of undesired weeds by creating a protective barrier in the top layer of soil, which prevents weed growth. Pre-emergent needs to be applied before weeds start to germinate. If the weeds are visible, pre-emergent will not control them and post-emergent herbicides are required, or the weeds must be pulled.

How is the Pre-Emergent Applied?

In most cases we apply a granular pre-emergent that is appropriate for landscape beds using a handheld spreader. In some situations, we may apply a liquid pre-emergent using our truck sprayer.

How Long Does it Last?

Our bed pre-emergent program includes 2 treatments per year. Each treatment will last for up to 6 months. We recommend applying bed pre-emergent twice a year to get a full year of coverage. Typically, we apply bed pre-emergent in January – February and again in June – July.

What to Expect

The bed pre-emergent will greatly reduce the number of weeds in your beds but will not completely eliminate them. Just like with lawns, some weeds in landscape beds are not controlled by pre-emergent and must be pulled or treated once they germinate. We recommend keeping a thick layer of pine straw or mulch in your beds to further reduce unwanted weeds. We also recommend immediately removing any weeds that pop up in your beds. Allowing weeds to grow and mature can cause your beds to be overrun with weeds.
