Although warm season lawns are somewhat tolerant of the summer heat, cool season lawns can struggle with the heat, humidity, and periods of drought. Since Fescue lawns cannot spread and repair themselves like warm season lawns, they must be aerated and over-seeded to thicken and repair damaged areas.

All Fescue lawns can benefit from some level of renovation every year. One of the best means of rejuvenating your lawn is to combine the power of professional core aeration with over-seeding. Core aeration helps reduce compaction caused by drought, helps break down thatch, and allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the root zone. This results in expansion of the root system for thicker, healthier lawn. Plus, a freshly aerated lawn provides a perfect seed bed for Fescue seed.

Fescue lawns should be aerated and seeded between September and November for best results. This will allow the new seedlings time to mature and develop a strong root system before the cold winter months. It will also ensure a thick, healthy lawn the following spring.

After Seeding Care

With new seed, you should always use light frequent watering (at least once a day). You should water enough to keep the top 1″ to 2″ of soil moist, but not overly saturated. If the seedbed is allowed to dry out, germination can be reduced considerably. Keep up the watering even after you see the first signs of germination. Young grass seedlings will need consistent watering until they start to mature.
